Failed renewal payments, grace period & automatic downgrades
What happens when a renewal card charge fails, how the 5-day grace period works, and how to prevent automatic downgrade to Free.
If your recurring renewal payment for Starter or Pro fails on your billing due date, Maskr does not cut off your privacy features immediately. Instead, your account enters a 5-day grace period.
How the 5-day grace period works
- Full benefits remain active: Your masks, custom domains, username subdomains, and reply allowances continue working normally during the grace window.
- Automatic payment retries: Our billing provider (Chargebee) automatically retries your card over the grace period.
- Email & dashboard alerts: Each time a renewal attempt fails, we send an email notification showing the attempt number and the exact date your grace period ends, and display a red Renewal Payment Failed banner in Settings → Plans & Billing.
What happens if all retries fail?
If payment cannot be collected by the end of the grace period (all dunning retries are exhausted), Chargebee cancels the unpaid subscription and Maskr automatically downgrades your account to the Free plan. You will receive an email confirmation explaining that your plan was downgraded due to an unpaid renewal.
How to resolve a failed payment before downgrade
- 1Open Dashboard → Settings → Plans & Billing.
- 2Ensure your card has sufficient funds or click Upgrade / Renew on your plan to complete payment with an updated card.
- 3Alternatively, if you no longer want a monthly recurring charge, you can top up your credit wallet and click Switch to Pay As You Go.
